The Beastie Boys (or "Beatsie Boys" as AdRock seems to enjoy saying lately) took over not just Y100 but the Wachooovia Center the other night. If you got there early enough, you saw the wonderfully silly dog show. Ten minutes of dogs climbing ladders and jumping through hoops...who else but the B-Boys could get away with that as an opening act? Of course, the real opening act was the excellent Talib Kweli. The Beasties took the stage and played an awesome set with just the 3 MCs and 1 DJ ("Mix Master Mike with the scratch routine!"). Some of my personal favorites of the night were "Super Disco Breakin'," "Body Movin'," and the opener "Root Down." Mid-way through the set, the guys vanished and let MMM take over, until they returned on a mini-stage with their full band and instruments in hand, playing a mini-set of some of their jazz-funk songs. They returned for some more rap, and during "Paul Revere" not only did the Boys let the crowd rhyme most of the song, but MCA went to the floor and took a lap around 1/2 the crowd. For the encore, the Beasties appeared on a platform about a section and a 1/2 above me for a high-energy "Intergalactic." The house lights came up to fake out the audience for a few minutes, then some guitar rumblings came from behind the curtain, the lights went back down, and the full band Beasties re-emerged for "Gratitude" and "Sabotage" (with keyboardist Money Mark practically doing cartwheels on his keyboard stand!). A awesome "pageant" with a hot crowd! If you want to ch-check out the full setlist, and some pix from the show, the Beasties have their own blog too:
